Imagine them.
Actually, don’t.
- One mosquito is irritating enough.
- Ten in your bedroom would probably keep you awake.
- A thousand would be horrifying.
The greatest danger of extraordinary numbers may not be their size.
It may be how ordinary they eventually sound.
But: 40,000,000,000,000 mosquitoes? The idea is absurd.
We cannot really visualize it. But we immediately understand that the number represents something almost unimaginably large.
Now replace one word. $40 trillion. Somehow, that sounds more familiar.
Why? It is exactly the same number: $40,000,000,000,000
The United States recently crossed $40 trillion in gross national debt.
We can debate how we got there, who is responsible, whether it is sustainable, and what should be done about it.
But before any of those debates, perhaps there is a simpler question worth asking:
Do we actually comprehend what $40 trillion means?
Good Morning, Bank Manager
Let’s make the number personal. Imagine walking into your local bank.
“Good morning. I’d like to borrow some money.”
“Certainly. How much?”
$40,000,000,000,000.
There may be a short silence.
But let’s assume our unusually accommodating bank manager approves the loan.
“Let’s say the interest rate is 5%.” Five percent. That doesn’t sound particularly frightening.
Until the bank manager prints the annual interest bill:
$2,000,000,000,000
That’s $2 trillion a year.
- Approximately $167 billion a month.
- About $38 billion a week.
- About $5.5 billion every day.
And tomorrow? Another $5.5 billion. And you still haven’t repaid one dollar of the original $40 trillion.
Suddenly 5% feels a little different. Nothing about the mathematics changed.
We simply changed the way we looked at it. Million. Billion. Trillion.
Here is another way to experience scale. Forget money entirely.
Let’s use time.

About 11.6 days. - One billion seconds:
About 31.7 years. - One trillion seconds:
About 31,700 years. - And 40 trillion seconds?
Approximately:
1.27 million years.
Think about that for a moment. Million. Billion. Trillion. They sound like neighboring words.
They are not neighboring quantities.
Yet we hear them so frequently that they have begun to blend into the language of everyday news.
- A billion here.
- A hundred billion there.
- Another trillion.
- Several trillion.
Eventually, perhaps, we stop experiencing the magnitude and simply recognize the vocabulary. What About 40 Trillion Footballs?
Now let’s make it ridiculous again. Imagine: 40,000,000,000,000 footballs.
Where would we put them? How many stadiums would we need? At some point we would probably stop asking about stadiums and start wondering whether we have enough planet.
It sounds absurd because we know exactly what one football looks like.
- The same is true of our mosquito.
- We understand one mosquito.
- We understand ten.
- Our brains have something recognizable to multiply.
But very few human beings have any personal experience with a billion dollars, let alone a trillion.
And that may explain something important. When numbers exceed human experience, they can stop behaving like quantities and start behaving like words.
Million. Billion. Trillion. We know which is larger.
But do we still feel how much larger? The Numbers Are Getting Bigger
This is not merely an exercise about government debt.
Around the world, we increasingly discuss investments and obligations measured in tens of trillions of dollars.
One major estimate suggests the world could require roughly $106 trillion in cumulative infrastructure investment through 2040 across transportation, energy, digital infrastructure, water, social infrastructure, agriculture, defense and other essential systems.
Again: $106 trillion. Now stop abbreviating it:
$106,000,000,000,000
- We can argue whether that investment is necessary.
- We can debate where the money should come from.
- We can discuss governments, private capital, infrastructure funds, pensions and investors.
- But first we should probably understand the number we’re discussing.
Because when $100 trillion begins sounding like another investment projection, something strange has happened to our perception of scale.
Now Come Back Home
- Forget trillions.
- Forget governments.
- Forget infrastructure.
Let’s talk about a number almost everyone understands. Your savings account.
“Darling, great news. We made 5% on our savings this year.” Last year: $100,000 Today: $105,000
Wonderful. We made $5,000. The bank statement is correct. The interest is real. Every one of those 105,000 dollars exists.
So, we are 5% richer. Right? Not necessarily. Suppose the general price level increased approximately 3.5% over roughly the same period. Your $100,000 needed to become approximately $103,500 simply to keep pace with that increase in prices.
So, the interesting question isn’t: How many dollars do we have now? It is: How much can our $105,000 actually buy today?
That’s a very different question. The balance tells us how many dollars we own. It does not automatically tell us how much purchasing power those dollars represent.
Our money increased. But the prices of the things our money buys increased too. The $5,000 gain is visible.
The erosion of purchasing power is much harder to see. There is no line on the bank statement saying: Purchasing Power Adjustment: -$3,500 And perhaps that’s why we rarely think about it that way.
The Number Can Be Correct While Our Impression Is Wrong
This is where our little experiment becomes more serious.
- $40 trillion is correct.
- $40,000,000,000,000 is also correct.
- 5% is correct.
- $2,000,000,000,000 is also correct.
- $105,000 is correct.
Yet each presentation creates a very different human reaction.
The mathematics didn’t change. Our perception did.
Numbers are wonderfully precise. Human intuition isn’t.
We understand quantities best when we can connect them to something within our own experience:
- A dollar.
- A paycheck.
- A grocery bill.
- A football.
- A mosquito.
- A day.
- A year.
- A lifetime.
Once numbers move far beyond those boundaries, our ability to intuitively understand them begins to weaken.
- And repetition can make the problem worse.
- The extraordinary becomes familiar.
- The familiar becomes ordinary.
- And eventually the ordinary barely attracts our attention.
When Extraordinary Becomes Ordinary
- Perhaps this is why enormous numbers deserve more attention, not less.
- Not because every trillion-dollar investment is irresponsible.
- Not because every large government obligation represents catastrophe.
- Not because every enormous corporate valuation is irrational.
- And not because large numbers themselves are good or bad.
- But because meaningful decisions require some understanding of scale.
And scale becomes difficult to judge when the numbers involved exceed almost everything a human being experiences in ordinary life.
That brings us back to those mosquitoes.
40,000,000,000,000 mosquitoes.
- Absurd.
- Terrifying.
- Almost impossible to imagine.
Now:
$40 trillion.
- Familair
- Another headline.
- Same number.
Different reaction. And perhaps that difference tells us something about ourselves.
The greatest danger of extraordinary numbers may not be their size. It may be how ordinary they eventually sound.
So, the next time someone says:
“One trillion dollars.”
- Stop for a moment.
- Don’t hear the word.
- Look at the number.

Count the zeros.
- Ask what it represents.
- Ask what it costs.
- Ask what it buys.
- Ask what 5% of it actually means.
And when looking at your own money, ask one additional question:
Not only: “How much do I have?” But: “What can it buy?”
Because numbers count money. Understanding gives those numbers meaning.
